Kitchen Cabinet Painting Cost in Vancouver (2026 Guide)

Gabe Penner7 min read

Kitchen cabinet painting in Vancouver costs between $6,500 and $18,400. Where your kitchen lands depends on the number of doors, the door style, the condition of the existing finish and the coating system. This guide explains what goes into a proper cabinet refinish and why the process and materials matter more than the headline number.

What the cost covers

Every door and drawer front is removed, labelled, cleaned, sanded, primed and spray-finished off site. Frames are prepared and painted in your kitchen. Doors go back on with hardware aligned, and the kitchen is cleaned at the end of every working day. Most kitchen projects take five to eight business days.

What drives a cabinet painting quote

Number of doors and drawer fronts

This is the biggest factor. Each piece gets the same sequence of cleaning, sanding, primer and finish coats. A kitchen with 40 doors takes roughly twice the labour and material of a kitchen with 20.

Colour change

Going from dark stained wood to white or light grey is one of the most demanding jobs in cabinet work. The existing finish needs heavier sanding and a primer that blocks tannin bleed. Skip that step and yellow blotches appear within weeks.

Coating system

We use professional 2K coatings from Renner, ALCEA and Acroma Pro. They cure harder and resist steam, chemicals and abrasion far better than wall paint used on cabinets. Applied through professional spray systems, they produce a seamless, refined surface. A brushed finish is also available and has its own hand-applied character. Cabinet condition

Peeling laminate, grease build-up and dents need extra work before a fine finish will hold. Laminate and thermofoil need bonding primers made for slick surfaces. Older Vancouver homes often have solid wood doors from the 1950s with layered lacquer that needs chemical stripping before primer bonds. That foundation work is what separates a finish that lasts from one that chips within a year.

Islands, pantries and trim

An island adds doors and end panels that need the same finish. Crown moulding, light valances and glass-front doors with painted interiors add scope too. All of it is listed in the quote so you can see how the number was built.

What a proper cabinet quote includes

  1. Removal of all doors, drawer fronts and hardware
  2. Cleaning and degreasing of every surface
  3. Hand sanding for adhesion
  4. Bonding primer on all surfaces, not only a topcoat
  5. Spray-applied 2K finish coats
  6. Painting of all visible cabinet frames
  7. Precise reinstallation of doors and hardware
  8. Touch-ups after installation
  9. Full floor and countertop protection

Some painters skip the primer to cut the price. Without a proper bonding primer the finish chips within months and you pay twice. Always ask what primer and what coating a quote specifies.

Kitchen access during the work

When we work on the frames, your kitchen access is limited for one to two days. During that time you can use your sink and appliances with some coordination. Once the frames are done, full access returns while the doors finish curing off site.

Why refinishing is worth it

For most kitchens, professional refinishing costs roughly half of full replacement and takes days instead of weeks. Your layout stays the same, which avoids plumbing, countertop and floor disruption. The result is a finish built to a standard that surpasses the original factory coating, with unlimited colour options and custom Pantone matching.
